‘Necessity is the mother of invention’ is an expression that makes a lot more sense to me today. I never thought of myself of having exceptional problem-solving capabilities, nor did I imagine becoming a product designer – until the day I became a mother. This is the story of my personal journey of becoming a mumpreneur and how searching for solutions to my nail trimming crisis brought out my supermum powers. Little did I know that this would lead to designing the safer baby nail trimmer- The Nail Snail.
It all started when I accidentally cut my first-born’s finger while trimming his nails. I had the most terrifying experienced and realised that at that precise moment, I had injured my most precious being on this Earth. I had to find a solution to my problem and I was a on a mission to search high and low for safe baby nail clippers that would eliminate the risk of further harming my darling little one.
I was not only discouraged but devastated by the quality and design of existing products on the market. I thought there had to be a better solution out there. Most available products on the market were focussed on cutting and clipping. When it came to tiny fingernails and toenails, it made more sense to trim and file rather than cut and clip.
It has been an amazing journey so far. And I never actually intended to start a business. I was literally just looking to solve the nail trimming problem for my own family. Only after launching a successful Kickstarter Campaign back in February 2017 and conceptualising the prototype of the baby nail trimmer, I realised the journey of the Nail Snail was going to be both interesting and entrepreneurial.
Two more babies later, the safer baby nail tool has been introduced into 15,000 homes across Australia and internationally. I can’t believe how many parents out there were facing similar nail care dilemma. Nail Snails started selling out while I attended baby-related expos. I felt like I had created a product that was not only helping parents provide nail care for their young ones but was significantly reducing the risk of injuries.
The Nail Snail has gained popularity recently and has been featured in numerous publications, gained thousands of social media followers and has earned award-winning success. All this recognition is fantastic but would’ve never been possible without the parent community who have supported me throughout my entrepreneurial journey and who have raved about the Nail Snail on social media.
Young and new parents love the Nail Snail because it is a product that brings them peace of mind, after all the early years of parenting should be about creating memories rather than being overshadowed by the fear of hurting the baby or toddler.
Receiving a number of recognitions such as the Australian Good Design, the Big Innovation and the AusMumpreneur Award just a few months ago proved that the hard work had really paid off. I was even more surprised just recently, when it was announced on Channel 10’s Australia By Design that I had just been announced top 10 finalist for best product innovation of the year across Australia. Being recognised nationally does have its perks but it is important to note that success doesn’t happen overnight. Personally, it is the special feeling knowing that I am helping families alleviate the risk of hurting their little ones that makes me feel accomplished.
A Partnership that Works
My journey proves just how a mother’s intuition can create a ripple effect and lead to entrepreneurial success. I hope to share my story and business insights with other mums and budding entrepreneurs who just like me are finding new solutions to daily baby care problems. I also look forward to publishing a children’s’ book that I am currently working on. I am so grateful to be able to combine business and the joys of motherhood. Business and motherhood can create beautiful partnerships that can only flourish with help from a supermum’s problem-solving capabilities.
